Creation of Israel Research
-May 14th 1948, David Ben-Guiron the head of the Jewish Agency, proclaimed the establishment of the state of Israel after the British Mandate of Palestine. Harry Truman and the US supported this movement
-The UN general assembly defined the creation of Israel as a Partition Plan with an economic union of the two states
-Resolution 181 (II) put into motion on the 29th of November, 1947
-The Resolution caused a civil war in Mandatory Palestine the very next day
-Jews celebrated the resolution
-Baruch Kimmerling has said that Zionists "officially accepted the partition plan, but invested all their efforts towards improving its terms and maximally expanding their boundaries while reducing the number of Arabs in them."
-Palestinians rejected the resolution and argued that it was an infringement upon the principles of the national self-determination in the UN Charter
-The Charter States: "All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development. "
-700,000 Palestinians became refugees and Israel refused them reentry into their land
-In the early 1900s Zionist Jews from Europe started to immigrate into Palestine and essentially take over their land
-During Hitler’s reign Jewish immigration increased and the Palestinians felt more threatened and started to fight but were crushed by the British
-The attacks on Jews also increased their willingness to fight
-The Jews used the holocaust as a moral argument to justify the creation of a Jewish state
-Jews began immigrating to Palestine in very large number which stirred the conflict negatively

-In 1948, the Jews went on the offensive with a controversial attack called “Plan Dalet” this was thought to be either an ethnic cleansing of Arabs or just a plan to push the Arabs out of the Jewish land set out by the UN’s partition plan
-The Jewish made it seem like the Palestinians were terrorists simply because they hated Jews
-Jewish forces committed atrocities as they attacked Palestinian societies all over
-Israel does not acknowledge any unethical behavior or does not accept responsibility for the Arab exodus
-The UN granted the partition plan because they thought that the Zionist claims were legit

Suez Crisis
-Was built by the British and the French
1956: Soviet invasion of Budapest to stop a democratic uprising (violently stop the uprising and the world sees what the soviets do).
-British, French, and Israel decide to take back the Suez Canal.
-October of 1956, Israel attack and the British/French launch attacks.
-The US is not notified of this attack and is upset because it makes democracy look bad.
-Lester Pearson and the UN send peacekeepers to the area.
-This is a direct cause of the 1967 “6 day war” (Egypt, Syria, and Jordan attempt to destroy Israel)
-The US is not keen on another proxy war because of Vietnam, they send people to resolve the issue, however Israel decides to attack Egypt with airstrikes
-In 6 hours Israel destroys 90-95% of Egypt’s air capability and destroy the Syrians in the north
-Israel takes the whole Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank
-This war creates a massive refugee crisis, who create a Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO)
-1.8 billion Muslims “hated” Israel, and Israel attempts to justify their occupations by saying they feel threatened
- Terrorism begins as the PLO attempt to speak out against the Israelis
-Plane hijackings, bombings, rocket attacks, and the Munich Olympics 1972 attack were avid examples
-In September of 1970, Nassar dies
-Anwar Sadat replaces him
-In 1973 Sadat says “this is our year of decision”, and launches an attack across the Sinai Peninsula with Syria attacking at the North across the Golan heights over the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
-Israel was caught off guard with these attacks and in the early parts of the war, it appears that Israel might lose
-The US backs Israel, and the Soviets back Syria
-The US’ contributions are significant enough to alter the fate of Israel
-Israel has to vacate the Suez Canal
-1977 Sadat visits Israel, this was huge because by Sadat going to Israel it proves that Sadat thought Israel was legit (Backed by potential US investment)
-1978 Sadat meets Israeli Begin in Camp David (brokered by Jimmy Carter), here they discuss that Egypt will control Gaza and the Sanai if Egypt recognizes that Israel is legit
-OPEC (Oil and Petroleum Exporting Countries) declares economic war on the US in 1973 by placing an oil embargo on the US.
-OPEC is established in 1967 as a response to the 6-day war
-OPEC forms because they are increasing the use of oil by 5%, but paying low oil costs
-The US were buying the crude oil at low rates, making it into products and reselling the transformed product back to the Middle East
-This outrages the Shah of Iran
-1973: Détente, Vietnam War, USSR and China have meetings with the US
-OPEC’s embargo sparks a trading agreement between the USSR and the US, and the US discover Oil in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska
-1979: Irans economy is decreasing and Islam fundamentalists (Ayatollah) start a revolution
-In 1980 oil begins a 5 year decline
-The US back Suddam Husane with millions of dollars to invade Iran
