Mao started the Cultural Revolution in 1966 because he wanted to have a pure form of Communism. He lanuched this Revolution to reassert his authority in the Chinese Government. He targeted certain people who were upset about what was going on at the time. These people included; ones who wanted to return to capitalism, specialists and anyone who diobeyed the "Little Red Book." The Red Guards were so violent that the PLA had to retore order and end the Revolution in 1969.
