After WWI American President Woodrow Wilson proposed a form of collective security called the League of Nations. His goal by creating this system was to prevent another world war. This was suppose to be achieved by international collaboration much like the United Nations of today. However the fatal mistake made by the League of Nations was the exclusion of three superpowers. America, Russia, and Germany were all excluded. The league feared Russia's communist rule and wouldn't accept Germany due to the recent war. America was unable to join due to issues within the congress. Wilson was a democrat, however his congress was majority republicans, therefore when he attempted to join the League of Nations it did not pass in congress because it contradicted America's goal of isolation. The League of Nations later fails due to the exclusion of these strong countries. Its failure was due to the lack of military support and force. This lack lead to the appeasement of Hitler, which then contributed to the start of WWII and therefore failing the initial goal set by Wilson.
At the Paris Peace conference America, Britain, and France or The Big Three had varying motives. The Big Three were originally The Big Four however Italian Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando caused conflict within the group and it was then forth known as only The Big Three. An easy way to look at their varying motives is to imagine a spectrum. America sat at the more lenient end of the spectrum and believed that Germany should be given a chance to rebuild after the largest war the world had ever seen at the time. On the other end of the spectrum was France. France pushed for a harsh punishment that included unfairly high reparation costs. The third and final nation, Britain, positioned its self between the two extreme ends of the spectrum. Although Britain didn't agree with the extremely high reparation cost proposed by France, they did want to expand their empire by taking German colonies around the globe. In sum, the motives of the nations that made up The Big Three varied in severity and the spectrum explained above illustrates those motives that placed them on the spectrum.
